Are Christians Supposed To Wear Wedding Rings

Nowadays couples are more than anxious to choose their wedding rings. To most of us, there is no religious ceremony without the traditional and romantic ring exchange preceding the vows. However, there are people wondering whether the habit is appropriate or not for those who truly want to respect their Christian believes.

To begin with, why should we ask this question? What do wedding rings have to do with ones religion? The issue probably rises from the fact that the two lovers are offering each other a ring right in the middle of the religious ceremony.

Then comes another natural question. Why would God have something against this innocent ritual? The answer appears in the Bible, where a certain verse forbids us to cover ourselves with jewelry pieces, with gold and gemstones, with anything that wants to catch the eye. Once upon a time, people used rings just to mark their properties with a specific symbol inscribed on the metal circle. Nevertheless, today we wear all kind of rings, even for toes.

The problem can be clarified if specifying two aspects – which is the purpose of the wedding rings and which are the results of wearing one. Married people generally wear their rings as a symbol of their love and commitment, as a way of showing others that they do have a life partner, as a constant memory that there is always someone loving them and caring about them, wherever they are. Some simply know it all the time, others need to be reminded every now and then, and there is nothing wrong in it as long as they watch their rings, feel they are married and act like it. Wedding rings normally have more a sentimental purpose than a beautifying one, and from this point of view, there is nothing wrong for a Christian to wear a wedding ring.

And the second aspect, regarding the results of this act, is that people, whether they know it or not, they do act more responsibly when wearing a wedding ring. Is not about the fame of having a diamond ring, but more about the appreciation that someone loves them so much to offer them diamonds.

Otherwise said, Christians could and should wear wedding rings with no shame. If the God we believe in wants us to love each other and to be faithful to each other, and if a ring helps us being better, the wedding rings should be allowed.
